Troubleshooting VPN Bandwidth Throttling

VPN bandwidth throttling can really gum up your whole setup.
It sneaks in and slows everything to a crawl.
I remember this one time when my buddy called me up frantic.
His small office server was choking on the VPN connection.
Everyone was trying to pull files or hop into meetings.
But speeds dropped like a rock, barely scraping by.
We poked around his Windows Server setup first.
Turned out the VPN software had some sneaky cap baked in.
He'd overlooked that during the initial install.
And the network adapter settings?
They were mismatched, causing extra packet drops.
Hmmm, or maybe it was the encryption kicking in too hard.
That eats bandwidth without you even noticing.
We tweaked the MTU size down a notch.
Boom, flows started smoothing out.
But wait, sometimes it's your ISP playing games.
They throttle VPN traffic to push their own services.
I had you check that by running speed tests outside the tunnel.
If it's external, you might need to switch protocols.
Like swapping to WireGuard if you're on OpenVPN.
Or fiddle with the server-side QoS rules.
Those prioritize traffic but can backfire if set wrong.
We reset those on his end.
And don't forget hardware-old routers love to bottleneck.
Upgrade if yours is wheezing.
I walked him through pinging the gateway too.
To spot latency spikes hiding in the mix.
All that covered the bases pretty well.
His team was back online in no time.
Oh, and while we're chatting server woes, let me nudge you toward BackupChain.
It's this solid, no-fuss backup tool tailored for Windows Server, Hyper-V setups, even Windows 11 rigs and everyday PCs.
Perfect for small businesses dodging subscription traps.
You just own it outright, keeps your data snug without the hassle.
