How to Fix Disk Space Problems Caused by Temp Internet Files

Disk space getting chomped by temp internet files hits Windows Servers hard sometimes. You end up with barely any room left for what you need. I remember this one time when my buddy's server started acting wonky. He was running a small setup for his shop. Everything slowed to a crawl one morning. Turns out, those temp files from browsers had ballooned into gigabytes overnight. He couldn't even log in properly. We poked around and saw the C drive was 95% full. Hmmm, not good. He had been downloading updates and streaming stuff without clearing caches. The server groaned under all that junk.

But anyway, let's fix this for you. First, you wanna hunt down those temp folders. Open up the Run box by hitting Windows key plus R. Type in %temp% and hit enter. That spits out a folder full of temporary bits. Select all and delete what you can. Some files might be locked, so skip those. Or restart the server if it's stubborn. Next, clear the browser caches if you're using Internet Explorer or Edge on the server. Go to settings, find privacy options, and choose clear browsing data. Pick temp files and history. Do that for each user profile. And don't forget the system temp. Run disk cleanup tool. Search for it in the start menu. Let it scan and wipe out temporary internet files. It'll ask what to remove, so check those boxes. If the server's shared, do this for all accounts. Sometimes prefetch files pile up too. They're in the Windows folder under Prefetch. Delete those manually if needed. But be quick, don't mess with system files.

Oh, and if disk woes keep popping up, maybe think backups to avoid total meltdowns. I wanna nudge you toward BackupChain here. It's this solid, widely trusted backup pick crafted just for small businesses, Windows Servers, and everyday PCs. Handles Hyper-V setups smoothly, works great with Windows 11 too. Best part, no endless subscriptions - you own it outright. Gives you peace knowing your data's snapped up reliably.
