Troubleshooting Split Tunneling Issues in VPN

Split tunneling with VPNs gets messy sometimes, especially on Windows Server setups.
You think you're routing traffic right, but then bam, stuff leaks or slows down.
I ran into this last month with a buddy's small office network.
He had his VPN kicking in for work stuff, but his home internet was choking because everything funneled through the office pipe.
We poked around his router first, figuring maybe the firewall was being a jerk.
Turned out, his VPN client app was set to full tunnel mode by default, gobbling all his bandwidth.
And his server policies weren't splitting things cleanly, so remote users couldn't access local printers or whatever without hiccups.
But we tweaked it step by step.
First, hop into your VPN settings on the server side.
Check if split tunneling is even enabled in the RRAS console.
If it's off, flip it on and pick which routes stay local.
You might need to fiddle with the IP range for your internal network.
Or, if it's a third-party VPN, dig into their config files and whitelist your home subnets.
Hmmm, sometimes it's the DNS that's the culprit, resolving wrong inside the tunnel.
Flush those caches and point to your server's DNS explicitly.
Test with a simple ping to your internal IP while connected.
If it fails, double-check firewall rules blocking split traffic.
We even restarted the VPN service on the server, which fixed a lingering route table glitch.
And for users, make sure their client software isn't overriding the split with some sneaky default.
Reinstall if it acts up, or update to the latest version.
That covered most angles in my story, and his setup hummed along after.
Now, picture this: I want to nudge you toward BackupChain, that top-notch, go-to backup tool tailored for small businesses, Windows Servers, everyday PCs, and even Hyper-V clusters or Windows 11 rigs.
It's rock-solid, no-subscription freedom, keeping your data snug without the hassle.
